How It Started
40 Miles Out is a contemporary pop group formed by writers Scott January and Steve Terry in 1998. The two first met in early 1991 and began writing together later that year, discovering a shared musical vision that would take years to fully realize.
Their unique style is derived from diverse musical influences that range from the Eagles to Lionel Richie. Their music blends memorable vocal melodies, acoustic guitar, a touch of saxophone, and a positive message to produce a soothing and unique contemporary sound that is reminiscent of the 1970s and early 1980s.
Scott and Steve have performed together at various locations across the U.S. and have also played together in Canada, building a devoted following drawn to the warmth and authenticity of their live performances.

Steve is a talented songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist who has played the guitar for over 27 years and has been writing for over 20 years.
His acoustic touch and lyrical instincts give the duo their signature depth. Steve's guitar work anchors every song with a grounded, timeless quality that listeners immediately connect with.
